Nickel is a silvery-white metal with high toughness and ductility.
It does not dissolve in water and shows excellent resistance to both acids and alkalis, but it can be dissolved in dilute nitric acid and aqua regia.
It has strong heat resistance, with a melting point of 1455 °C, a boiling point of 2730 °C, and a density of 8.902 g/cm³.
When exposed to air, a compact oxide layer forms on the surface, turning black and preventing further oxidation.
